Staying Connected During COVID-19

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought about unprecedented challenges for all of us. As social distancing becomes the new norm, there is a major risk that vulnerable people such as elderly, low-income or at-risk individuals might become isolated and unsupported. This is particularly difficult for hospital patients who have been diagnosed with COVID-19, and may not be able to see their families again due to risks of exposure.

In these tragic circumstances, technology has played a critical role in creating solidarity and bringing people together. Features that were once ‘nice-to-have’ applications such as video chat have now evolved into essential tools. They create a vital connection with those who need it the most, and enable vulnerable people to easily access the support of family, friends, and healthcare workers.

This situation has accelerated our adoption of technology and created a new sense of urgency around the use of smartphones and tablets. It marks a wider, sudden societal shift where technology, far from being a divider between generations or something that drives us apart, has in fact become a new way of bringing us closer together.

To harness the power of technology in these challenging times, Electrobac is proud to partner with TELUS in its Mobility for Good campaign. Originally conceived to support youth leaving foster care, this initiative has been expanded to deliver over 10,000 free mobile devices with $0 rate plans to help vulnerable Canadians stay connected during the COVID-19 pandemic. In recent weeks, Electrobac donated 100 refurbished smartphones to this worthy cause, and TELUS generously provided SIM cards enabling the Electrobac team to make a contribution of devices to local efforts in Montreal as well.

The isolation caused by this pandemic could have a potentially long-lasting impact on the recovery and mental health of the people who need our support the most. With access to free mobile devices and SIM cards, they will be able to stay connected with friends, family and health services during these difficult times, so that we can overcome this challenge together. Thank you to TELUS for partnering with the Electrobac team during this campaign and their continued efforts towards making positive change.
